The New Year has begun with a bang, or rather, a “bomb cyclone” and freezing weather, even in Florida. So we can not help but reflect on all the “weird” and often unfortunate weather events that occurred in 2017. A surprising number of devastating and deadly extreme weather events and natural disasters happened all over the country and even all over the world in 2017, and Florida was no exception.

The Atlantic hurricane season, which officially began on June 1 and ended on November 30, was especially destructive, featuring 17 named storms. The season held both the highest total accumulated cyclone energy and the highest number of major hurricanes since 2005. All ten of the season’s hurricanes occurred in a row, the greatest number of consecutive hurricanes in the satellite era.

Initial predictions for the season anticipated that an El Niño would develop, lowering storm activity. However, the predicted El Niño failed to develop, with cool-neutral conditions developing instead, later progressing to a La Niña – the second one in a row. This led forecasters to upgrade their predicted totals, with some later anticipating that the season could be the most active since 2012. “Active” turned out to be an understatement.

Here in Florida, we got out fair share of the wind, rain and even flames over the course of last year. Tropical storm Emily and Hurricane Irma pummeled us, fires burned a large portion of Southwest Florida, and a number of other unnamed tornados, tropical weather events, and floods affected out state.
